Death's Head Legion Part Two of three in The Spear of Destiny, the first novel in a new steampunk, horror, alternate history, action-adventure series set in a 1920s where the Nazis have begun their subjugation of the world using the occult, advanced science, and a holy relic with awesome powers.
And don't miss the other parts of this serialized novel—Part One Black Sun Reich and Part Three Shadows Will Fall.
Trey Garrison recaptures the unapologetic adventure, wonder and excitement of the classic pulp fiction of the 1930s and 1940s, blending elements of steampunk with deeply-researched historical fiction and a good dose of humor. The novel also explores major philosophical and moral issues relevant to our contemporary world the trade-off between security and liberty, the morality of preemptive war, and what fundamentally separates good from evil.
The North American continent is made up of several rival nations, and a Cold War is building between them. The Nazis rose to power a decade earlier. People travel by airship and powerful organizations calculate with Babbage's Difference Engine. The Nazis have hatched a plot to raise a legion of undead soldiers.
Enter Sean Fox Rucker, Jesus D'Anconia Lago, two Great War veterans and freelance pilots who are pulled into the quest. They are joined by a brash Greek merchant, a brilliant Jewish cowboy, and the woman who once broke Rucker's heart. This ragtag band of reluctant, bickering, swashbuckling heroes soon is locked in a globe-spanning race against Nazi occultists, clockwork assassins, and a darkly charismatic commando. In a world where science and the supernatural coexist, and the monsters of legend are as real necromancers who summon them from dark realms, our heroes alone stand before the rising darkness. But all their efforts may not be enough.

I felt the Characters were all taken from other works - Han Solo as the As the hero with a gay Chewbaca by his side. All three books are filled with lines from Star Wars and other well known Sci Fi works(Firefly). The story itself was not terrible, but could have been better.

Death Head Legion The Spear of Destiny Part Two of Three eBook Trey Garrison Reviews
Death's Head Legion is the second installment of a three-part serial that began with Black Sun Reich. If you don't read Black Sun Reich first, this installment will make no sense.
The Great War opened a rift that exposed a dimension where magic reigns, or maybe it opened a doorway to Hell. As we learned in Black Sun Reich, the Nazis are taking advantage of this new supply of dark energy to create transgenic creatures. By combining a fragment of the Spear of Destiny with a chemical/magical compound (Death's Head Legion fills us in on the details), the chief Nazi scientist has managed to turn political prisoners into ... you guessed it ... flesh-eating zombies. Of course, the process works on corpses and, of course, anyone who is bitten by a zombie becomes infected and turns into a zombie. The scientist is working on methods to make the zombies follow orders instead of eating everyone in sight. To achieve that he needs the entire Spear of Destiny, which is where we left off at the end of Black Sun Reich. In Death's Head Legion, Rucker and his helpers try to find the Spear before the Nazis can get it, a quest that leads them to Romania, homeland of vampires. You just knew that vampires would sneak into this story, didn't you? Heck, there's even a golem.
Otto Skorzeny (the legendary SS officer who rescued Mussolini from captivity) plays a critical role in part two. So does Hitler's favorite interrogator, the Skull, who somehow has developed psychic powers. The descriptions of the Skull's depravity seem gratuitous, although an extended encounter with the Skull does develop Rucker's psychological profile.
Chunks of Death's Head Legion are slow going, particularly the chit-chat about the Spear of Destiny and its history. At other times, action enlivens the story. Rucker being chased across rooftops in Rome seems like a scene cribbed from action movies but rappelling from one dirigible to another is more inventive. Given the setting, it's logical that the Romani would enter the story, leading to an interesting discussion of Romani legends. I appreciated that Garrison Trey uses the story to remind readers that the Romani are the largely forgotten victims of Nazi genocide.
Bottom line at the end of part two, this serialized novel still hasn't become the conventional zombie/vampire story I've been dreading. For that reason, and because it's been fun so far, I'm guardedly looking forward to reading the concluding episode.
I could not put this book down, nor parts 2 and 3. The characters are so witty, and the alternate history story line is a blast. Definitely a great buy and an awesome read.
I felt the Characters were all taken from other works - Han Solo as the As the hero with a gay Chewbaca by his side. All three books are filled with lines from Star Wars and other well known Sci Fi works(Firefly).
