“A stranger with eyes as dark as night.”

Customer service rep and timid geek Henry Parsons would rather spend his nights playing board games at home than spend a night on the town. He loves to lose himself in fantasy worlds, but a fateful bite from a savage wolf one night after work forces him to reevaluate his romantic fantasies. He's changing, and so is the world around him. Can anything keep him safe as he's hunted down by the beasts inside and around him?

Lone alpha Paxton Pierce is set on keeping his pack safe against all odds. He stumbles on Henry by chance, just in time to save him from himself – but will his promise to train Henry be enough? From his first glimpse of Henry's adorable face, he knows nothing will be the same. His connection with Henry is stronger than anything he's ever felt before.

As Henry struggles to overcome his shy nature and control his newfound ferocity, sexy and mysterious Paxton agrees to train Henry and help him shift at will. They grow closer and sparks fly during training, but as their whole way of life is threatened, will animal attraction and loyalty be enough to keep them together?

Growl is the first steamy gay paranormal romance novel in "The Pierce Brothers" series.

This story was either too long or too short. It felt too short because the world building left much to be desired. There needed to be a little more about the greater society of shifters. I did sort of like that the Alpha Paxton was also a transformed-from-human shifter (this can be done well), but I think it also took away from believing them to be "alphas" they way Taylor went about it. It felt like anyone could became an alpha if they wanted to start a pack. Were there no larger packs for them to find support? Do shifters really just wander around and transform people and that's how new shifters are created? I don't mind having an alpha with a small pack trying to make it, it just needed more context. Or to be a shorter story. If it had been half as long, the lack of background and context would have made a lot more sense. It would also have cut into a lot of the extra details that didn't world build. (Dana Marie Bell does a good job of this.)

I appreciated that Taylor made a clear decision to deviate from (recent) traditional shifter tropes, but I felt like some of them might have helped. I would say these are-
1) Either total control over shift or only shifting at full moon (the combo was weird with them becoming erratic and aggressive as the moon became full. I found myself wishing they would just stop being wolves!);
2) Mating is destined or personally chosen, but clearly permanent (I don't have anything against multiple romantic partners in a character's past, but, to me, in a shifter story, mating is forever. Maybe until one dies. But the idea that you would just be like, 'this is my mate' like you would a boyfriend and could easily leave one lacked the commitment I look for in a romance novel.);
3) Shifters are born shifters or both born and made (this goes back to context/historical background. This was seriously lacking which made everything hard to get into and believe. Where did this all start?!).

I generally liked Henry. He was sweet and I enjoyed when he stood up for things despite being fairly submissive as a person. Paxton was also a great guy. I appreciated his respect for Henry and I loved the point he made about consent. Seriously, that was so refreshing.
They were honestly a healthy couple in that respect. So, THEY were great characters. Taylor just didn't give them a great shifter context to exist in, in my opinion.

However, if you are interested in a story that turns away from a lot of the genre's stereotypes and has two nice guys fall in love, then you will probably enjoy this book and the next. For me, I will return to my cliches and their fantasy.

Growl The Pierce Brothers Book 1 edition by CA Taylor Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Hot, steamy and enthralling!!
Having read the original I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the new, improved version.
Excellent character development, and a descriptive story made for a thoroughly enjoyable read.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received Arc copy for an honest review.
My honest opinion is this story line is fantfurtastic. The love story between Paxton and Henry is awesome.. I am truly sad about the reverend though.. The distress that he went through. Then you have the hot Lucas.. I am looking forward to hearing more about him and the rest of them.. This is an excellent book..
Paxton and Henry meet as the result of a random (seemingly) attack by a werewolf. Their tender and tentative relationship developed around the again seemingly unrelated attacks by hunters. Previously, a short novella Growl has "fleshed out" the story and made the characters come to life. Their caring and romantic journey is both enjoyable and steamy.
I received a ARC in return for a review of Growl. It has been mine as I hope it will be your, pleasure.
3.5 stars
Henry had not had a good day. It was bad enough he had to work in a call center, but while waiting for a bus after a late night shift, he has the misfortune to run into a werewolf. Well, originally he thought it was a large dog, but after he had gotten bitten - well, after - he found out that one little incident had changed his life forever.

Paxton just happens to be driving by as Henry is learning he can shift. It wasn't something Henry had even believed possible, there were people around (read humans for people) and yeah, poor Henry really didn't cope very well. Paxton does the only thing he can do - locks Henry in a cage until the morning and then proceeds to explain to his new friend about his new life.

In this story werewolves can be dangerous when they turn, and likely to kill anyone who gets in their way. Henry is attracted to Paxton in a big way, but he's confused and running scared. Paxton's brother does not help, and in fact - the dichotomy between Paxton and Lucas is strange - and that doesn’t help calm Henry' peace of mind.

The annoying thing about this book was Henry. As a reader I like characters that I either love, or I love to hate. Henry just came across as insipid, which meant that I couldn't love him, and to hate him would have been mean. The Alpha submissive thing going on in the bedroom was a complete surprise, and not a good one. I love BDSM in books, but this wasn't it.

There is more to this story than Paxton and Henry though. Sebastian adds an unusual dynamic. There are hunters out to kill them, connected to a church no less. Henry has some conflicted loyalties between Paxton and Lucas as to how the matter should be resolved, and Paxton kind of let me down there. There is a real twist in the storyline with this though as you will see - I didn't see that coming.

Overall this is an unusual story. The action was fine, the storyline was an interesting twist on an old classic but I struggled to find the connection between Paxton and Henry. There are no true mates in this story, although Henry becomes Paxton's "mate," which is more of an extension to boyfriend than anything else. He also, by virtue of his actions, becomes a sort of Alpha too, which is...unusual. But you will have to read this to find out more. This is the first book in a new series and I will be reading the next one to see where the author goes with this.

Henry is described as a "timid geek". Its an understatement. He's a total and complete doormat. There was nothing likable about him. He spent the book afraid of everything. Overall I just found this book was poorly executed.
I bought this book for 99 cent but I loved it!!! I can't wait to read the next installment! Ready for someone to tame Lucas
I started reading this book last night and just finished it a minute ago I loved it, I like reading about Henry and Paxton their chemistry is amazing and the sex is so hot, it is such a wonderful take on werewolves shifters and I can't wait to start on book two, I am so intrigued by Lucas and I would love to know his story.
